Genesee
County brings two great races back to back for a weekend of
bicycle, hand cycle, and kid racing at its finest. On Saturday,
July 23, the Fenton community welcomes the Maillot Jaune, a
13-mile road race. On Sunday, July 24, the Flint community
embraces its second annual criterium, Le Champion Pavé. Le
Champion Pavé is named after Albert Champion, former Cycling World
Mile Record Holder and founder of AC Spark Plug started in Flint,
Michigan in 1909, the birthplace of General Motors. Cyclists will
race on one of Michigan’s oldest brick paved road that was laid
down nearly 100 years ago.
Families
can visit with Buzby from Flint Hit’s Country B95 with Buzby grand
marshaling the kids’ race. All participants in the kids’ race get
a medal! So Kids, bring your parents, your bike, and your helmet,
watch the pros, and then take your turn racing on the bricks.
Buzby’s kids’ race is a FREE event for kids nine and under. Also,
test your skills on the same race course in the FREE Community
Ride on Sunday in Flint! Bring your bike and helmet, and ride with
Mayor Walling.
Le
Champion Pavé offers a hand cycle division. While the hand
cyclists are dicing it up on the bricks, spectators are able to
visit the Saginaw St. flat lot to demo a variety of hand cycles.
Local
restaurants will have specials throughout the day. Music and
entertainment provided in the flat lot. FREE parking and FREE fun!
Safe
Kids Greater Flint, led by Hurley Medical Center brings fun to
learning about bicycle safety. After a proper fit of a bike
helmet, education is integrated with a hands on experience as kids
ride bicycles through a small city replica while experiencing
first hand many of the “dangers of the road,” basic maneuvers,
basic safety signals and how to be bike savvy. Parents are welcome
to walk along. Bring your own bike or ride one of our bikes. All
ages welcome. This FREE event is from 11am - 2pm.
Le
Champion Pavé T-Shirts are $10 each. |
